Bali is on the brink of a major transportation revolution with the launch of its first-ever fully underground Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. Slated to break ground in September 2024, this ambitious project aims to ease the island’s infamous traffic congestion while boosting tourism and economic growth.
Phase 1A: Connecting Key Hubs
The first phase of the project, known as Phase 1A, will link I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport to Sunset Road, covering 6.3 kilometres. This section will feature five underground stations, strategically placed at:
- I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport
- Kuta
- Pura Desa Adat
- Central Park
- Sunset Road
This route will provide seamless connectivity for both locals and tourists, drastically cutting down travel times in one of Bali’s busiest corridors.
Investment and Feasibility Study
A feasibility study conducted by Korea National Railway (KNR), funded by the Korea Exim Bank, is nearing completion. This research will help refine the project’s execution, ensuring efficiency and long-term sustainability. Phase 1 is estimated to cost AU$1.3 billion, with funding sourced through public-private partnerships (KPBU).
Solving Traffic Congestion & Boosting Tourism
Bali’s growing popularity as a global travel destination has led to increasing congestion, especially in tourist hotspots like Kuta and Canggu. The new LRT is expected to: ✔ Reduce travel delays for both residents and visitors ✔ Provide an eco-friendly transportation option ✔ Enhance access to key attractions ✔ Encourage further tourism-driven economic growthWith backing from international partners, including South Korea, this project is expected to revolutionise Bali’s transportation infrastructure, paving the way for sustainable urban mobility.
What’s Next?
Construction is projected to take three to four years, meaning Bali could have a fully operational LRT by the late 2020s. This development will not only reshape the island’s connectivity but also open new opportunities for real estate and tourism investments.
